Giquello & Associés Asian Arts auction at Hôtel Drouot ! Auction expert Renaud Montméat tells us all about it
ASIAN ARTS - COLLECTION JOHN BOWDEN COLLECTION DE MONSIEUR B. AND VARIOUS AMATEURS
Tuesday June 20, 2023 at 1:30 PM - Room 14 - Hôtel Drouot , 9 rue Drouot 75009 Paris
Renaud Montméat, CNES expert in Buddhist Art and Archaeology from India, China, the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, member of the SNA, Syndicat National des Antiquaires.
You have been active on the international Asian art market for over 20 years, and run the appraisal firm Renaud Montméat Art d'Asie, which provides appraisal and advisory services for buying and selling Asian art. Could you tell us about your career?
In the early 2000s, like many dealers, I started out at the Puces de Saint-Ouen flea market, selling at weekends what I'd found during the week.
I spent a lot of time at Drouot, which was a great place to learn, meet people and marvel.
I then opened a gallery in the centre of Paris, already dedicated to the sacred arts of India, the Himalayan countries, Southeast Asia and China. This was followed by participation in numerous art fairs (TEFAF Maastricht, Asia Week New York, BRAFA Brussels, Parcours des Mondes Paris), often with the support of colleagues which enabled me to reach a high standard internationally.
In the end, it was my taste for research and expertise that got the better of me and led me to devote myself over the last few years to expertise and advice for private clients and public auctions. My desire to pass on my knowledge has also led me to teach at an art school in Paris.
I now try to combine the sensitivity of the dealer with the rigour and method of the expert.
The work that has marked your career?
I was lucky enough to enable the Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts to acquire several pages of illuminated manuscripts from Tibet dating from the 12th century - rare works for which the museum had no equivalent.
Have you had an artistic crush recently?
The Guimet National Museum of Asian Arts is currently organising a fascinating exhibition entitled "Asian medicine, the Art of balance". One work in particular struck me: the Purusha from the Fournier collection.
It is probably the most beautiful illustration of the chakra diagram of the subtle body. We're also presenting one ourselves at the auction on 20 June, from a Belgian collection.
The highlights of the Giquello & Associés auction on June 20
Following the success of our first collaboration with Giquello & Associés last December, where we auctioned the Asian art collection of Liliane and Michel Durand-Dessert, we will be offering a new selection on 20 June.
The auction will open with a selection from the Indian art collection of British collector John Bowden. This collection illustrates the different periods of Indian art. The auction will feature archaeological pieces from the Indus civilisation, the Sunga period, reliefs from the Amaravati region, a Gupta torso, medieval statuary, a very fine Pichvai textile, and antlers from chariots. These objects were brought together by John Bowden and acquired from connoisseur dealers. A genuine private museum has been created to house them.
Also worthy of note is a fine selection of Himalayan art, including a superb gilded and repoussé copper Bhairava, Nepal, 18th century, height 54 cm, published by the Schoettle Ostasiatica gallery in Stuttgart in 1979. The sculpture is one of the greatest and most beautiful works of its time.
A rare collection of embroidered textiles from the Silk Road around the 8th-10th centuries.
The different periods of South-East Asia will be well represented, from archaic bronzes from Dongson to a fine collection of Khmer hands and Buddhist bronzes from Thailand and Burma.
We also feature a fine collection of Inro and Chinese porcelain.
